Spiced Beef Casserole

here are some images ......

This winter warmer has a lovely chilli kick and I served it with 200g potatoes per person, would also have been good with green beans.
It takes about 2 hours to cook this, but it only took about 10 minutes to prepare the ingredients so I cooked this on Tuesday night while cooking Tues night's dinner and then left it cooking for 2 hours while we ate and watched some telly!

Serves 4
PP per serving 8 (and 4 extra for 200g spuds)

Ingredients
Low fat cooking spray
600g lean braising steak
1 onion cut into wedges
1 red chilli, sliced thinly
2 carrots, cut into small chunks
350g turnip, cubed
2 star anise
5 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 tbsp plain flour
125ml dry sherry
450ml beef stock
Salt and pepper

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 140 degrees. Heat a large lidded pan and spray with the oil spray. Put the flour and seasoning in a bowl and toss the beef until it is coated then put it in the frying pan and brown.
2. Add the onion, chilli, turnip, carrot, star anise, cloves and cinnamon stick. Cook for 5-8 minutes. Pour in the sherry and beef stock and bring to the boil and then simmer for about 1.5 hours with the lid on, then a further 20 minutes with the lid off, for the sauce to thicken.
3. Check the seasoning and remove the cinnamon stick and star anise and cloves and serve!
